Over the coming days and weeks, i will be posting various information and links in this thread.

The aim of this, is to help those who are not so internet savvy to understand risks involved with certain events such as virus infections, spyware, etc...and means of removing or preventing said events.

This can be as simple as what software you use, what progras you allow to have access to the net, what sort of sites you visit.

An example, i know of a few people who do not use ANY firewall or antivirus products, and never get any infected files. How? they are careful what they do online, or as to what sites the visit etc. This said, it is NOT an action i would recommend, no matter what level of experience you hold.

If you have any questions in this area, feel free to ask them here.

For now,

Mel

Ok, so for thnis thread, i'll be posting an article from a website which tends to hold a LOT of interesting security information. This article is about protecting the system from malware, and can be found at:

10 Tips To Protect Your PC From Malware (Spyware, Adware & Viruses)

Mar 6th, 2008 by admin

1. Download Anti Spyware:

Every 9 out of 10 internet connected PC’s are attacked with spyware and adware. So downloading an Anti Spyware Software from the reliable source will fight against all the dreadful spyware and adware programs that may invade your privacy.

2. Run Anti Virus Software:

Without an anti virus software, it is not advisable to run an
internet connected PC. Even if you run an anti spyware, you need to
install an online Anti Virus Protection so that it prevents any harmful virus from entering into the PC.

3. Do Not Open Unknown Emails:

Open the email when you know the address or else simply delete it.
Through unknown email addresses, there is a danger of spreading of
malware. So just simply ignore them.

4. Beware Of Free Downloads:

Do not get involved with free downloads. In the name of FREE, you
may fall victim to viruses and spyware. So stay from free downloads and
download the necessary software from the reliable sources.

5. Active X Control:

Some websites ask you to install the active x controls. Do not
download and run active x control unless you know it otherwise there is
a danger of viruses with it.

6. Flashing Banners:

While you are browsing the net, you get flashing banners. Do
not fall to them as they simply fool you by saying that your PC has
been infected by so and so viruses and you need to buy the product to
get complete protection.

7. Run Automatic Updates Provided By Operating System:

Turn on the feature of automatic updates that are provided by
operating systems. Windows normally updates all the security features
so it gets updated automatically to fight against the malicious
programs.

8. Stay Away From Pop-Ups:

Stay away from annoying pop-up ads. Do not close it by clicking OK.
Always use the right click and close the window from there, otherwise
it redirects you to some other website.

9. Run Internet Security Suite Software:

If possible, download and install Internet Security Suite Software.
This does the work of anti spyware, anti virus and firewall. So with
one internet security suite software, you can manage all the things.
.

10. Use Mozilla Firefox Browser:

For more security and protection, it is always recommended to
use mozilla firefox browser. As the Internet Explorer is more
susceptible to security risks, it is better to avoid that.

ok, my note: while most of this is basic to many of us, this may be some use to others. So, feel free to comment or add your own thoughts.
